The Abbeville County School District Board of Trustees heard a favorable audit report for the School District at the Jan. 28 school board meeting last week.
Jonathan Meredith of the firm of Garvin Manley told the trustees that the District received, overall, a “clean”, unmodified opinion--the highest opinion that could be granted--for its audit for the 2023-2024 fiscal year.
The District received more than $1.8 million in revenues than had been budgeted, and $500,000 more in expenses than had been budgeted.
The fund balance increased by about $900,000 for the 23-24 fiscal year.
The School District was found to be in compliance in terms of the administration of federal funds it had received, and received a clean, unmodified opinion in this category, as it did in the categories of financial statements and internal audit controls.
In addition, the School District has more than four months worth of operating expenses in its fund balance.
The state recommends that a district have at least two months worth of experiences--thus, the district is in good shape for any unforeseen situations, said School District finance director Adam Cann, who also provided an update on plans for the 2025-26 budget.
There are four positions in the School District which the District is planning to leave vacant, Abbeville County School District Superintendent Dr. Lori Brownlee-Brewton told the trustees.
These positions are at Wright Middle School, John C. Calhoun Elementary, and Long Cane Primary, she said.
Class sizes for the remaining positions will increase slightly due to the vacancies, a School District source said.
